- King George V laid the foundation stone of the University in July 1920
- Swansea was the 29th university to be established in the UK and began life with just 89 students
- From the beginning, Swansea was both a scientific and a technical institution, linked to the great industries of South Wales. It was also a centre of excellence in the humanities.
- The city gave its new civic university an enviable site in rolling, coastal parkland. It also donated Singleton Abbey, the neo-Gothic Mansion that dates back to 1780
- In 1921, Swansea appointed the first woman professor in a British university
- More recently, Swansea University received the 2005 Times Higher Education Supplement Award for the UK's Best Student Experience
- The 2006 Undergraduate and Postgraduate prospectuses each picked up a Silver Award at the 2005 Heist Awards, celebrating excellence in Higher Education marketing
