A new Swansea University project providing training opportunities and packs (often at no cost) for small businesses in Wales that will help with effective business planning in line with Sustainable Development requirements.
The Swansea PP4SD Team are keen to hear from Trainers, Educators, and small businesses in Wales.
The project includes:-
PP4SD UK
PP4SD is a highly successful project which has been designing and publishing training materials throughout the UK since 1999. PP4SD works closely with partner organisations and practitioners to develop and run 1-day training courses in Sustainable Development for professionals. These help businesses to move towards compliance with legislation about employment, health & safety and the environment. To date PP4SD has developed sustainability training for a diverse range of professions including banking, construction, engineering, architecture, public utilities, planning and horticulture.

The Swansea PP4SD project
In 2007 a specialist team of educators for sustainability based at Swansea University established the current project with European Social Fund support via the Welsh Assembly Government's Knowledge Exploitation Fund. The aim is to extend the PP4SD approach to small and medium-sized businesses in four priority industries in Wales. Training packages have been produced, closely tailored to the needs of businesses in those industry sectors. Project partners included PP4SD UK, Lantra, the British Trout Association, Higher and Further Education Institutions and more than 100 businesses in the four target industries.
The training materials have been designed for use by individuals in small and medium-size enterprises, and are primarily targeted at Aquaculture, Fisheries Management, Environmental Management and Agricultural Manufacturing, though the principles they explore are universally transferable. In particular, users who do not work in one of the target industries may find the Environmental Management materials helpful, as this is the most generic programme, and applicable to any business or individual.
For Trainers and Educators, our materials offer a comprehensive introduction to the concepts of Sustainable Development, using a PowerPoint presentation. A Facilitator Manual contains all the information needed to run a session, additional information and web links provide extra details if required.
The materials are very flexible, and can be expanded and targeted at any level. They are copyright free, and the PP4SD team hope that they will be widely used, and adapted to specific needs. The Workbook itself is ideal for an individual to work through, even if they do not run a business themselves. It should give a greater understanding of the principles underpinning Sustainable Development, and how to start Action Planning towards living and working more sustainably.
As part of the WISE network www.wisenetwork.org the Swansea PP4SD team is available to facilitate training courses for individuals or groups, and can provide the four sets of materials in English and in Welsh, often at no cost. The materials may also be downloaded from the UK PP4SD Website www.pp4sd.org.uk in both languages.
