Swansea is long established as a centre of excellence for mass spectrometry, with the siting of the Royal Society Research Unit here in the 1970s, followed by the Mass Spectrometry Research Unit in the 1980s and currently the presence of the EPSRC National Mass Spectrometry Centre.
Currently there are thirteen academic and support staff, eight wholly supported by direct research council funding, involved in the IMS core activities supporting research programmes involving more than a dozen Swansea postgraduates and postdoctoral workers. Through the BAMS facility, the research of Biological Sciences and the Clinical School staff is also supported by collaborative and contract support research programmes.
