Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about money matters.

Is a deposit required?

All international applicants are required to pay a deposit of £2,000 towards their tuition fees before the Visa support Letter is issued.

* Deposit for English Language Course (ELTS)

Students who have paid deposits to Swansea University or ICWS = no deposit to ELTS
Students who haven’t paid a deposit and apply for EUS Programme = £2000
Students applying for Programmes where course fee is less than £2000 = Full course fee in advance.

All applicants can make a payment towards fees early and receive a receipt from the Finance Department.

When do I pay tuition fees?

You can pay tuition fees in two instalments:
1. The first instalment (50% of your total tuition fee) must be paid at or before enrolment.
You will not be permitted to enrol unless the required payment has been made.

2. The second instalment by:

  • February 12th 2010 for Undergraduates and Postgraduate Taught Programme students
  • April 2nd 2010 for Postgraduate Research Programme students


How do I pay?

You can pay by cheque or bank draft made payable to Swansea University . We will not accept a bank draft if it is made out to you personally.
You can pay by wire transfer direct to Swansea University 's bank account. Here are details:

Do you offer any payment discount?

Yes. Pay your fees in full (if your total fee is over £4,000) and have 2.5% discount.
Full payment must be made before October 2nd 2009

You can take off 2.5% from the full tuition fee before you make the payment. If your payment reaches us after 2nd October, you will be have to pay the difference (2.5%).
If you have a bank draft for the full tuition fee, you can apply for 2.5% discount when you enrol at the university. Refund forms are available from the Finance Department.

Discounts are only for students who pay fees in full personally, they are not available to corporate sponsors.

Can I pay by debit/credit card?

The University does not accept credit card payments from new students unless both the card and card holder are physically present to make the payment. American Express, Diners Club and Nat West Bank Solo debit cards are not accepted.

How much money should I budget for my stay?

Should I buy health insurance?

If your course is longer than 6 months, you and your family can have free medical care while you are in Britain . If you are coming on a course of six months or less, you may need full medical insurance. Please see the International Handbook for information.

How can I open a bank account in the UK?

We advise you to open a British bank account before travelling, or as soon as you arrive in Swansea . Please see the International Handbook on how to open a bank account.
