Professional Studies

The first mission of the School of Law is to undertake legal research of international standing. Our second mission is to offer law teaching at the highest competency level in order to provide the best learning experience for our students. Our third mission is to support legal practitioners in Wales in servicing the needs of the Regional Economy. The Department of Professional Legal Studies was created to further the achievement of these second and third missions.

Our third mission activity

  • Meets our commitment to the Legal Wales agenda by helping to improve the quality of legal service provision within the Region.
  • Meets our commitment to the 'Winning Wales' economic strategy of the Welsh Assembly Government by providing support to an important SME constituency within the Region.
  • Meets our commitment to the Law Society by addressing a recognised Regional need.
  • Fosters research overhead.

We are proud of our close links with International, Regional and Local Law Firms. We offer the Legal Practice Course for law graduates seeking to enter the profession and also the Graduate Diploma in Law for non-law graduates looking for a change of career. A unique feature of our Legal Practice Course is the opportunity for students to extend their study and obtain a Masters in Legal Practice and Advanced Drafting. In-house legal training is provided for FTSE 100 firms as part of an active Continuing Professional Development agenda. Our Award winning IP Wales® business support initiative compliments our work for the Legal Wales agenda and supports our growing commitment to the Technium® programme supporting the development of knowledge based business within Wales.
