The Department of Research and Innovation oversees the University’s Third Mission and knowledge transfer activities with business and industry; it also helps to strengthen research activities undertaken in the 10 Schools.

The University is currently undertaking innovative projects worth many millions, such as the Institute of Life Science and the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications. This activity has grown vigorously over recent years and is a clear indication of the vibrant research and business impetus that exists at Swansea.

Operational issues are managed by the team, led by Professor Jan Nielsen Director of the Department of Research & Innovation and the University’s Director of Knowledge Transfer Services. Professor Nielsen has run a number of hi-tech spinout companies over the last 20 years and has worked in several UK universities.

The Department offers a single point of contact, both for other departments within the University and for partner organisations.

All the University’s varied Third Mission activities are overseen by the Department, enabling academic expertise to be transferred to the marketplace in a fast and streamlined manner.

It has sufficient flexibility to ensure the University’s aims are met with regard to the management of large, prestigious projects. At the same time it offers a wide range of expertise in helping academics seeking funding for their research projects.
