Focus on sport at Swansea

Swansea's involvement in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games means that sport at Swansea has never been more in focus.

The University has been included within the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, for the Olympic sports of Athletics, Hockey, and Triathlon.

The Australian Paralympic swimming team will also be based in south Wales and will train at the Wales National Pool

Research within the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre (SESRC) is thriving, and includes investigations into how exercise is assisting Diabetes patients through the Exercise and Diabetes Research Group, and how tests using the latest technology can enhance the performance of elite athletes (see Swansea City fighting fit link to the right).

The University's sports facilities have been boosted with a new Sports Village housing an athletics track, two water-based all weather pitches and an indoor training centre for athletes.

Swansea's Athletics Union at the University caters for the wide range of clubs which vary from the mainstream sports like rugby, football and netball, to water sports like sailing and sub aqua and to martial arts like karate and tae kwon do (read karate club student's experience to the right). The AU utilise the excellent facilities available at the University that allow indoor and outdoor sports, men's, women's and mixed sports and team and individual sports. Swansea's excellent facilities attract the sporting elite, and Swansea welcomed its new cohort of sporting scholars at the start of this academic year.

The Swansea environment is perfect for accommodating sporting pursuits and AU's outdoor sports clubs, including sailing, mountaineering, windsurfing and hiking are very popular with students, (see the Hiking Club's profile link on the right).
