Swansea University - Living Expenses

Living Expenses

If you are considering studying at university you'll need to think carefully about your finances. In addition to tuition fees you'll need to budget for a variety of costs, including:

  • Accommodation - your accommodation costs will vary depending on the type of accommodation you choose. The majority of new students live in University hall on campus where most meals are provided
  • Course-related costs - there may be certain costs associated with your course for items such as books and course materials. You may be required to part in excursions, visits, survey camps or field trips away from the University, either in term time or in vacations
  • Travel expenses - most students return home to their family during vacations and you will need to budget for this, as well as local travelling costs while you are at the University
  • Everyday expenses - unless your meals are provided with your accommodation, you need to buy food. You will also need to think about budgeting for items such as laundry, telephone calls, medical and dental expenses, sports activities, hobbies and social activities

Many banks and building societies provide interest-free overdraft facilities for students, and you can also get preferential rates for things like personal insurance, travel, cinemas and other entertainment venues - these discounts can add up to a considerable saving for students on a tight budget.
