At Swansea we recognise the value that personal tutoring has in supporting students through their university experience, particularly in their initial transition to undergraduate studies and in their wider personal development. All undergraduate students are therefore assigned a personal tutor who will be available to discuss their academic and personal progress with them. This tutor will provide one-on-one tutoring.
Student Services at Swansea aim to provide integrated, professional, student-centred services, which offer information, advice and support to enable every student to develop and achieve their full potential. Whether you need general information or specialist advice you can drop into the Student Services reception in the Keir Hardie Building and a member of staff will be pleased to help.
Some academic subjects offer materials via Blackboard, the online learning environment at Swansea. This allows students to access lecture notes and other related materials they may need to complete work or research. Quick reference guides to getting started with academic skills at degree level including tips on lectures and note taking and planning essays and assignments are available via the Study Skills page of the website.
The Library and Information Services (LIS) not only provides a comprehensive library but also offers academic support through online resources, training and specialised staff for assisting in a particular subject.
Your subject team in LIS will also be able to suggest useful sources of information and support. The Information Desk in the Library is the first place to ask any general queries about Library and Information Services. General enquiries may also be taken to the Issue Desk in any library. LIS staff in all branches will provide initial help on all aspects of LIS services, though you may be referred to specialist support staff elsewhere.
The LIS Information Gateway enables you to search the library catalogue by author or keyword, research information by subject and access online services and news directories. The front page also offers a quick reference guide to dictionaries, encyclopaedias, maps and timetables. This page will usually be displayed and ready for use on the screens as you enter the library.
One of the four key aims of the University is "to prepare and promote the employability of students" and the University encourages its students to use the support provided by Careers and other student support services to assist them in their personal development. Career role is to help you to get a good graduate job - however you define that - and for some of you there will be intermediate aims such as student jobs, vacation work and placements, postgraduate study or taking time out. Careers delivers sessions in or through your academic department, offers a wider range of central facilities and services, and for graduates there is a special help-line and support group.
The Students' Union, based at the centre of the University campus, is a democratic organisation offering a substantial range of services and benefits to its members. These include photocopying facilities, academic representation by elected student officers as well as a professional advice and casework service dealing with a range of problems - from financial and housing matters to consumer protection and course-related difficulties.
Every new undergraduate student receives a handbook to guide and advise them through their time at university. This offers guidance on University regulations and procedures such as how to select modules, assessment and attendance as well as practical advice on successfully undertaking a degree. In addition, each School provides a handbook that contains guidance on Study Skills and contacts for further information within the school.
