Swansea University - Entrance Requirements

Entrance Requirements

For UK and EU students

In order to embark upon a scheme of study, you must satisfy a Course Requirement and a General University Requirement, which sets out the minimum qualifications required. Most applicants, when meeting the Course Requirement, will automatically satisfy the General Requirement.

For specific course requirements please visit the relevant course page include link.

The University treats all applicants on their individual merits and it welcomes applications from candidates with a range of qualifications.  As the majority of applicants for undergraduate study offer qualifications included in the UCAS Tariff, the course requirements are listed as Tariff points.

Offers are usually based upon three 6-unit awards (e.g. 3 GCE A-levels) and will typically range between 320 and 240 UCAS Tariff points (or equivalent).  While the majority of offers will be expressed in terms of UCAS tariff points, some Admissions Tutors will continue to make grades-based offers.

If candidates offer additional units these will be taken into account, as appropriate, when making offers.  For example, standard offers may be reduced where the additional units are deemed by selectors to be relevant to the intended degree scheme. Standard offers may also be adjusted to meet particular circumstances or as a result of interview.

However, the University accepts a range of qualifications, including Access Courses, International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate and more.  The Qualification Conversion Table gives details of equivalent offers for a range of common European qualifications:

If your qualification is not included in the table, please Contact Us to discuss your application.

Minimum General Requirements

Candidates are expected to meet the following two basic General Requirements in full before commencing their scheme of study:

  1. Grade C or above in GCSE English Language or Welsh Language (or equivalent) – click here for acceptable English language qualifications;
  2. Two passes (grade E or above) at GCE A-level (or one pass at A-level and two passes at AS level), or equivalent, for entry to degree schemes; or one pass (grade E or above) at GCE A-level (or two passes at AS level), or equivalent, for entry to the HND in Sports Science.

The University accepts a wide range of qualifications other than A levels, and is actively working to encourage applications from talented students who have the potential to succeed at university, whatever their background.

In addition to the above, candidates (including those of mature-age) may, in special cases, be granted exemption from the General Requirement if recommended by a department/school as having reached the necessary entrance standard to enable them to start on the degree course for which they have applied.

If you have queries about the acceptability of your qualifications, you are advised to contact the Admissions Office before submitting your application to UCAS.
