Swansea University First Responder Scheme

The University has put into place the ultimate benefits package: an emergency first response scheme. The aim of the scheme is to make early defibrillation immediately available in cardiac emergencies.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can happen anywhere, at any time. SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction that makes the heart quiver ineffectively. CPR is not enough. It is a temporary measure that helps to maintain blood flow to the brain. A lifesaving pulse of electricity, defibrillation, is the only treatment and must be delivered quickly to restore the heart's normal rhythm.

Because every minute counts when sudden cardiac arrest strikes, the University is placing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in 3 key locations around the campus. The Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust has trained a number of volunteer staff to be part of the emergency first response team. These trained responders will be prepared to use an AED with confidence. If you're interested in becoming part of this scheme and are prepared to commit to being on call for a regular 4 or 8 hour period each week, please email the co-ordinator Jeremy Collins at j.g.collins@swansea.ac.uk.

Every one of us at the University can make a lifesaving difference in a medical emergency by immediately calling 333. This vital step will quickly send trained responders to the scene.

The first responder scheme does not replace or diminish the role of departmental first aider(s). These vital members of staff should still be involved in medical emergencies - as they always have been - but where the situation is life-threatening you must always call 333. That action will alert the duty first responders.
